Spotlight on Southern Africa

Thursday 23 August 2012, 11am

There can be no question but that the biggest labour news story of the last week - perhaps the biggest labour news story of the year - was the killing of striking South African miners by police.  LabourStart has comprehensive coverage of this on our South African labour news page here.  If you want to know what's happening, and why, go there first.

Meanwhile, in Zimbabwe union-busting continues on a grand scale.  The latest front is the publicly-owned electricity company which has sacked 135 workers because they threatened to strike.  Among them is Angeline Chitambo, a member of the Executive Committee of IndustriALL Global Union.  IndustriALL has launched an online protest campaign calling on the company to reinstate the sacked workers.  Please sign up and spread the word.
