With the election only days away, this is the last chance to put the candidates under pressure to sign up to some of the issues that matter most to Mandate members. So how do you join in?

The time for in-depth political analysis is over. The time for televised leader debates is over. The time for politicians to kiss babies and tell us what they think we want to hear is over.

Now is decision time

We've heard what they had to say on bank bailouts, the EU/IMF deal, reform of the healthcare system, cuts to social welfare rates and to the minimum wage. We've heard why each of the parties is essential to the "public interest". We've heard what they plan to do if they get elected.

Now, it's their time to hear us.

Mandate News Election 2011



Mandate News Election 2011 has hit the shelves and as the name suggests the magazine aims to make some sense out of all the political noise we are being bombarded with at the moment. Why's it necessary? Because we want to make sure of the very best outcome for Mandate members on polling day, this Friday, 25th February. The only way to do this is for Mandate members to be informed and mobilised on how to use their vote to the best possible effect.

Minimum Wage War begins



SIPTU have mounted pickets on The Davenport Hotel and the Mont Clare Hotel, off Dublin's Merrion Square, as the worst predictions for the recently enacted Minimum Wage legislation have come to pass. When the legislation was being debated, the Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan TD, gave assurances that existing employees on 8.65
euro an hour could not have their wages reduced without their consent. However, in Dublin's city centre, the O'Callaghan Hotels Group has been trying to force its workers to agree to a reduction in their wages from the previous Minimum Wage of 8.65 euro per hour to a paltry 7.79 euro per hour - the alternative for these workers was to lose their jobs.
