Connolly Shoes Campaign Continues

Stand Up

The Connolly Shoes workers have now been on strike since early April, nearly nine months with no sign of any breakthrough. Despite this, their spirits remain remarkably high.

During the summer Connolly Shoes in Dun Laoghaire ceased trading in both of its stores and the premises were put on the market to rent. During this time our four members, who had been dismissed, kept a token picket on the main store for a couple of hours each day.

The Laura Ashley dispute has been running since 22 October and still the British furniture and fashion retailer refuses to engage with either Mandate or the State's labour relation forum the Labour Relations Commission. In a heroic act of solidarity, the workers of Laura Ashley Athlone recently voted to engage in a series of actions in protest at their employer's treatment of their Grafton Street colleagues.

Mandate fights Minimum Wage cuts



MANDATE trade union, along with other concerned organisations, reacted angrily to the Government's shameful cutting of the minimum wage in December's Budget. Flagged as a potential target before Budget 2011, this socially and morally regressive step was wrapped up together with the EU/IMF bailout. Government ministers then sought to blame external influences for stripping 12% off the pay packets of the poorest in society while some of those on extremely high incomes came through the Budget better off.
