Ireland is in the middle of the greatest economic crisis since the foundation of the State - a crisis caused by a culture of greed, stupid policy decisions and practically non-existent regulation of the financial system. The debate about how we tackle the crisis and who pays for it has been raging for some time. The Minister for Enterprise, Richard Bruton TD - cheered on by a host of employer groups - is proposing that hundreds of thousands of lower paid workers -whose terms and conditions are set by Joint Labour Committees (JLCs) - pick up a big part of the tab for the excesses of the Celtic tiger years.

As EU-IMF Come to town . . .

The Enough Campaign, involving Richard Boyd Barrett TD among many others, has called a week of protest and resistance to the EU-IMF during their next upcoming quarterly "review" visit (6 - 16 July) that will conclude with a National Demonstration on Saturday 16th July.

Cutting Rents not Wages will save Jobs in Retail

TASC Director Nat O'Connor takes a look at the
argument that cutting wages will create jobs.

Retail Excellence Ireland (REI) has released a survey of their members, which they contend shows that abolition of the JLC system would lead to thousands of jobs being created in retail. There are good reasons to believe that this is a mistaken point of view.

REI got responses from nearly half their members, 342 companies which operate 4,445 stores, who said that if the JLC system was abolished that they would save 2,896 vulnerable jobs and create another 2,888. Treating this as a representative sample, REI estimate the total number of jobs created would be four times this, as there are c. 25,000 stores in Ireland.
