Bruton Response To Mandate Pressure on Local TD

Friday 15 July 2011, 01pm

The side image is a copy of the correspondence I received from local Fine Gael TD Mr Dinny Mc Ginley in response to the Mandate campaign to pressure local TDs into their positions on the current Government proposals to attack those regulations that protect the low paid in our society.

It states amongst other things that 'The reform of wage setting mechanisms was one of the conditions of the Memorandum of Understanding with EU/IMF' and 'reform of the JLC/REA system is still a condition to be met. The proposals, which have been outlined in the Draft Programme of Reform, are all derived from the Duffy/Walsh report, which calls for radical reform of the JLC system to make it more flexible in responding to very difficult economic sectors affected. Specifically, the Report raises the problems created by the Sunday working provisions'.

The letter goes onto say 'the proposed changes will not change the situation of people who are now working. They will continue to hold the terms and conditions of their existing contracts of Sunday working and all other terms', and that 'Special provision will still have to be made by employers as provided for in the Organisation of Working Time Act. That Act requires either a premium for Sunday, a higher weekly rate because Sunday working is required, or a day off in lieu'.

It further states 'The aim of the changes is to make it easier for business to take on new employees. Every person taken off the dole will put money back into the economy, both in greater spending in the economy and by saving on spending on Social Welfae. Jobs have the greatest priority at present'.

PLEASE CHECK THE HOME PAGE OF THE MANDATE WEBSITE FOR CURRENT UPDATES ON THESE NEW CHANGES AND WATCH FOR THE EXPOLOITATION OF LOW PAID WORKERS IF THESE CHANGES ARE ALLOWED
